Walailak University Hospital has achieved a big step forward with the first successful transnasal surgery (Endoscopic Transsphenoidal Surgery) to treat a brain tumor. This minimally invasive technique allows surgeons to remove tumors through the nasal cavity—without the need to open the skull—leading to faster recovery and fewer complications.
The case involved a 49-year-old male patient who was admitted to Walailak University Hospital with symptoms of narrowed vision and tonic-clonic seizures. An MRI scan revealed a pituitary tumor pressing against the optic nerve, which was the cause of his condition.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Sasikan Sukhor, neurosurgeon at Walailak University Hospital, in collaboration with Dr. Raywat Noiphithak, neurosurgery instructor from Thammasat University Hospital. By using the transnasal approach, the medical team was able to successfully remove the tumor with several key benefits:
- Quicker recovery time for the patient
- Lower risks of complications, especially for the optic nerve and pituitary gland
- Improved vision after the procedure
- Reduced chance of recurrence
This achievement marks an important milestone in advanced neurosurgical care at Walailak University Hospital, bringing new hope to patients with pituitary and brain tumor conditions.
