In a recent medical triumph, a 47-year-old woman, covered by the Universal Coverage (UC) scheme, had a successful heart valve replacement surgery at Walailak University Hospital to address a serious heart condition called mitral stenosis. This condition is worsened by a large blood clot in the left atrium, posing an imminent threat of ischemic stroke, which potentially results in disability or fatality.
The treatment cost of this life-threatening condition was over 100,000 Baht, which could have been a financial burden for many patients. Thankfully, the Universal Coverage (UC) scheme, also known as the “30-baht scheme,” played a crucial role in providing access to the necessary medical treatment, highlighting the importance of accessible healthcare.
The patient had suffered a history of exhaustion, difficulty lying down, fatigue during exertion, body swelling, occasional blood coughing, difficulties at work, restlessness at night, and shortness of breath. Subsequently, she sought help at Walailak University Hospital. The heart specialist conducted a thorough examination, revealing the seriousness of her condition, severe mitral stenosis that started from rheumatic fever in her youth, developed into chronic endocarditis, and finally led to stenosis. Additionally, a significant blood clot was found in her left atrium, increasing the risk of stroke from cerebral emboli if left untreated.
The medical team at Walailak University Hospital stressed the need for urgent intervention, emphasizing the potential complications, including heart failure. To prevent these life-threatening consequences, they recommended heart valve replacement surgery. The surgery was ultimately successful, showing how having timely and comprehensive health coverage plays a crucial role in saving lives and reducing the impact of serious heart conditions.
